Liz Tate Teaches "The Craft of Editing" on fxphd.com

March 17th, 2009
Editor Liz Tate is currently wearing the hat of professor, as she teaches an editorial class on the fxphd.com website. "The Craft of Editing" focuses on the theories of editing rather than the technical aspects. "It's been a great experience," states Tate. "While the class is taught online, there is a lot of interaction with the students on the fxphd forums. The exchange of information between myself and the students, as well as between the students themselves, has made the class much richer."

John Montgomery, one of the founders of fxphd, believes that the best teachers are those who are active in the industry. "One of the great things about working with the crew at Hootenanny is that I'm still very much involved in high-end real world jobs. We can practice the latest creative techniques and workflow and pass that knowledge on to our members". Fxphd focuses on high-end online training on the web, with members in over 65 countries around the world.

"It's really made me think about why I make the choices I do in my every day editing," says Tate. "I think it's been a learning experience for me as well." In addition to teaching the theories of cutting, the class offers projects for students to cut to be reviewed by Tate. "It's amazing to see the endless variations the students get out of a finite amount of footage."
